There are several museums that provide ways to extend the content of
Chapter 5.
Included in the Texas Maritime Museum's permanent exhibits is a 1:12
scale replica of La Belle, the flag ship of French explorer, Rene-Robert
La Salle. The model took more than two years and over 6,000 hours to
create. The exhibit, titled, La Belle: Desolate Voyage, explores
what it was like for the crew and settlers of the doomed La Salle voyage.
El Paso Mission
Trail in El Paso, Texas
El Paso is home to three of the oldest, continuously active missions
in the United States. The Ysleta del Sur mission, built in 1681, was
an outreach to the Tigua Indians who settled around the mission. The
Socorro Mission was established as an outreach to the Piro and Manso
Indians the day after Yselta del Sur was founded. San Elizario,
built in 1789, was a chapel to a Spanish garrison and was occupied
by Mexican troops until the United States took control in 1848. The
Mission Trail Association Web site includes self paced online tours and
more information on the history of the mission trail.
